Tools for Google AI Mode (2026): what tracks it, what wins it

"Tools for AI Mode" hides two different questions: how do I use Google's AI Mode well, and how do I know whether it mentions my brand? A quick answer to the first, and an honest map of the second - what Search Console shows (and hides), what SEO suites actually capture, what AI visibility trackers measure instead, and which of it is free. (We make a tool in the last category, and we say so.)

"Tools for AI Mode" is a search with two different people behind it. One is a searcher who just met Google's new conversational tab and wants to use it well. The other is a marketer who just realized their buyers are getting full answers in that tab - and wants to know whether those answers mention their brand. This page answers the first question quickly and the second one properly, because the second is where the tooling actually gets interesting. Disclosure up front: we make Zene, an AI visibility tracker - one of the tool categories below - so apply the usual vendor-listicle skepticism to our own entry.

If you just want to use AI Mode: the tool is the tab

There's nothing to install. AI Mode ships inside Google Search - a tab next to the classic results - and the whole "toolkit" is learning to treat it as a conversation: ask full questions in plain language, push on the answer with follow-ups, use its deeper research modes for questions that deserve fan-out across many sources, and ask it to show where a claim came from. We've written a full mechanics guide in what Google AI Mode is and how it picks brands; if your interest is using the thing, start there. The rest of this page is for the other reader.

The marketer's problem: a search surface without a rank

Every tool question about AI Mode runs into the same wall, so let's state it before the tool list. A classic rank tracker works because a results page is stable and positional: query in, ten ordered links out, your position is a number. AI Mode returns none of that. It fans your question out into several sub-queries, searches Google's index for each, and synthesizes one conversational answer - which varies with phrasing, session, location and history, and continues as a dialogue rather than ending as a page. There is no public API for it and no fixed answer to screenshot.

So the honest framing isn't "which tool shows my AI Mode rankings?" - nothing truthfully can. It's: which layer of the AI Mode stack can each tool actually see? There are three.

Band 1: Google Search Console - free, official, blended

Google counts AI Mode impressions, clicks and positions in Search Console's performance report - but folds them into the overall Web search totals, with no filter to isolate them. Your GSC data already contains your AI Mode performance; you just can't see which part is which. It's still the only first-party signal in existence, and one pattern is readable through the blend: impressions rising while clicks stay flat on informational queries is often the AI layer answering the question before the visit happens. Watch it as a trend, not a truth.

We turned that signature check into a free tool - paste your GSC queries export below and it flags the answer-shaped queries earning far fewer clicks than their position predicts. It runs entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Band 2: SEO suites - keyword-level presence on Google's AI surfaces

The established suites - Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and their peers - have been extending toward Google's AI surfaces, typically starting with AI Overview presence on the keywords you already track, with AI Mode coverage arriving vendor by vendor. This band's strength is integration: AI presence lands next to the rankings, traffic and audits you already run. Its limit is depth - sampled presence on a tracked keyword is a checkbox, not the answer's content. The question that cuts through any suite's pitch is specific: which Google AI surfaces do you capture, how is that sampled, and can I see what the answer said? We keep the broader category comparison in the AI visibility tracker field guide.

Band 3: AI visibility trackers - measuring the engine underneath

The third band ignores the tab and measures what it's made of. AI Mode's answers are written by Gemini models grounded in Google's index - so trackers in this band ask the engines themselves your real buyer questions, on a schedule, and record whether you're named, how prominently, in what tone, against which competitors, citing which sources. Profound serves the enterprise end, Peec AI the mid-market, Otterly the budget tier - and Zene (ours) aims at founders and lean teams, tracking all five major engines including Gemini and turning the findings into a prioritized action plan. Honest scope, stated plainly: this measures what Google's AI layer knows and says about your brand - the substance AI Mode draws on - not a screenshot of the AI Mode tab itself. The two move together because they're the same models reading the same index.

The free stack, if budget is zero

  • Search Console for the blended first-party trend - free and already yours.
  • A manual protocol: your ten most valuable buyer questions, asked in AI Mode and Gemini on a schedule, answers logged. Tedious, free, and better than guessing - here's the full method.
  • The AI Mode impact analyzer above - also available standalone at /tools/ai-mode-impact - for finding which of your queries the AI layer is absorbing.
  • Zene's free checker: our AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT three buyer questions about your brand without a signup, and the open-source readiness extension scores any page's crawlability and quotability.

Tools don't win the answer - the work does

Whatever you buy, remember what the measurement is for. AI Mode picks brands by fanning out into sub-questions and lifting the clearest corroborated passages from pages that rank - so the winning moves are thorough sub-question coverage, answer-first pages that survive being quoted alone, clean structured data, and consistent third-party corroboration in the round-ups and communities the fan-out actually reads. That playbook is the AI Mode guide's second half, and the 90-day GEO plan sequences it.

The takeaway

"Tools for AI Mode" resolves into three honest layers: Search Console for the free, blended, first-party signal; your SEO suite for keyword-level presence on Google's AI surfaces; and an AI visibility tracker for the substance - what the engines actually say about you, trended over time. Nothing sells a literal window into every user's AI Mode tab, and anything that claims to deserves suspicion. Pick the layer that matches your question, and let the measurement drive the real work: being the clearest, best-corroborated answer to the sub-questions your buyers ask.

Frequently asked questions

What tools can track Google AI Mode?

Three bands exist today. Google Search Console includes AI Mode impressions and clicks for free, but blends them into overall Web totals with no separate filter. Classic SEO suites - Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and peers - track Google's AI surfaces at the keyword level, usually starting with AI Overview presence; depth varies by vendor and quarter. And AI visibility trackers - Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Zene - measure the engine layer underneath: whether Gemini and the other AI engines name your brand on real buyer questions. No tool gives you a literal per-user screenshot of the AI Mode tab, because answers are personalized, conversational and assembled per session.

Can Google Search Console show AI Mode traffic?

Partly. Google counts AI Mode impressions, clicks and positions inside Search Console's performance report, but folds them into the overall Web search type - there is no AI Mode filter to isolate them. So your GSC numbers already contain AI Mode performance; you just can't see which part is which. The signature worth watching is rising impressions with flat or falling clicks on informational queries - often the AI layer answering the question before the click happens.

Are there free tools for AI Mode?

Yes, enough for a real baseline. Google Search Console is free and carries the blended first-party signal, and our free AI Mode impact analyzer reads your GSC queries export in the browser and flags the queries the AI layer appears to be absorbing. Manually asking AI Mode and Gemini your top buyer questions costs nothing and builds intuition. Zene's free AI visibility checker runs your brand across the AI engines, including Gemini - the model family behind AI Mode - without a signup, and our open-source Chrome extension scores any page's AI readiness. Paid tools add scheduling, competitors and trend lines, which is what makes measurement honest over time.

What is the best way to use AI Mode?

Treat it as a conversation, not a query box. Ask a full question in plain language, then push on the answer with follow-ups - narrow the use case, ask for trade-offs, ask what it would pick and why. Use Deep Search-style prompts for research-heavy questions where you want it to fan out across many sources. And when the answer names products or brands, ask where that came from - the cited sources tell you what the answer was built from, which is exactly what a brand competing for that answer needs to know.

How do I get my brand mentioned in Google AI Mode?

There's no submission form and nobody can guarantee placement. AI Mode assembles answers by fanning your question out into sub-queries, searching Google's index, and synthesizing the clearest corroborated passages. So the work is: rank somewhere real for your category's sub-questions, write answer-first pages a model can safely quote, keep structured data and crawlability clean, and earn consistent descriptions of your brand in the round-ups, review sites and communities the fan-out searches actually read. Then measure whether it's working at the engine layer, on a schedule.

Do rank trackers work for AI Mode?

Only partially, and it's not their fault. A rank tracker is built around a stable, positional results page; AI Mode returns a synthesized conversational answer that varies by user, session and phrasing. Suites are adapting by sampling AI surfaces at the keyword level - genuinely useful for coverage - but a sampled presence checkbox is not the same as knowing what the answer says about you, in what tone, against which competitors, citing which sources. That answer-substance layer is what AI visibility trackers exist to measure.

The best AI SEO tools in 2026 - sorted by the job you're hiring them for

"AI SEO tools" is one label hiding three different jobs: AI that helps you write and optimize content, AI features inside classic SEO suites, and tools that track your visibility inside AI answers. An honest map of all three - what each category actually does, who it's for, and how to avoid buying the wrong one. (We make a tool in the third category, and we say so.)

The ChatGPT your buyers use isn't the one the API shows you

Ask the same question through the ChatGPT API and through the app your customers actually open, and you can get two different answers - one from the model's frozen memory, one from a live web search with real citations. Most GEO tools only ever measure the first. Here's exactly why the two disagree, why the gap decides where AI sends customers, and what it really costs to capture the answer people see.
