What's the situation?
Pick your case and get a concrete plan - official channels, a ready-to-send email for the sources AI cites, and a robots.txt generator. Nothing you type leaves this page.
1Audit what every engine actually says
Ask the question your buyers ask on each engine and note the exact wrong claim - engines disagree, and you can't fix what you haven't seen. Our free checker shows what ChatGPT says in three buyer answers, no signup; a free Zene account adds Gemini, and Pro covers Claude, Perplexity and Grok with the cited sources exposed.
2Trace the sources behind the answer
When the answer carries citations, those pages are where the wrong fact lives - an old press mention, a stale directory entry, a crunchbase-style profile. List every cited page that repeats the error. No citations usually means the claim comes from training memory, which makes steps 3–5 matter even more.
3Fix your owned pages first
Your homepage, about page and pricing page must state the correct fact plainly, in crawlable HTML, with Organization schema backing it. Engines cross-check against your own site - if it's vague there, third-party errors win.
4Email the third-party sources - template ready
Send the cited pages a short, friendly correction request. Editors fix factual errors far more often than people expect, especially when you point out AI assistants are amplifying the mistake:
Subject: Correction request - outdated information about [your brand]
Hi,
I'm reaching out from [your brand]. Your page currently states:
"[the incorrect claim, quoted from their page]"
That's no longer accurate. The correct information is:
"[the correct fact, stated in one sentence]"
Because AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite your page when answering questions about us, the outdated version is being repeated to people researching [your brand]. Could you update the page? I'm happy to provide anything you need to verify the correction.
Thank you!

Google (AI Overviews / Gemini): if the error concerns your business listing, correct it via Google Business Profile's AI-description process; use the overview's "Feedback" link for the answer itself.
Perplexity: report via the answer's feedback control and help center - and note its answers are citation-led, so step 4 moves it fastest.
Claude / Anthropic: flag the answer in-product (help center); web-grounded answers follow the sources you fixed in step 4.
6Re-check on a schedule
Retrieval-based answers update in days to weeks once sources change; training memory only updates when models ship. One re-check proves nothing - track it weekly until the correction sticks everywhere.
Free · no signup · nothing you type leaves your browser. Channels change - always confirm on the vendor's current page.
Why the sources come before the engines
Every AI engine builds answers the same two ways: what its model absorbed in training, and what it retrieves from the live web when you ask. Both paths start from public pages - which means a wrong fact in an answer almost always lives on a page somewhere, and the page outranks the complaint. Correct the page and every engine's retrieval improves at once; complain to the engine while the page stands, and the wrong fact comes back. That's why this kit leads with source outreach and treats the official channels as the follow-up, not the fix.
What each channel can and can't do
OpenAI's Privacy Portal is the most established removal path - it can filter personal data out of ChatGPT's responses, but filtering isn't amnesia: data inside trained weights persists until future models ship.
Google's tools split by surface: Business Profile corrections fix your listing's AI description, "Results about you" handles personal info in Search - the substrate AI Overviews draw on. There is no separate opt-out of AI Overviews that keeps you in Google.
robots.txt is honored by reputable crawlers and ignored by bad ones - treat it as your policy statement, and use CDN bot controls for enforcement.
The other direction
Most brands discover mid-cleanup that their real problem isn't being misrepresented - it's being absent while competitors get named. The full playbook for wrong facts is in ChatGPT is wrong about your business; if the audit shows absence instead, that's a different playbook - and measuring which problem you actually have is one free check away.
