Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?

Short answer: not the recommendation. ChatGPT now tests labeled ads and Google sells ads in AI Mode, but neither buys you a place in the answer. What's actually for sale in October 2026 - and what the brands that get recommended did instead.

It's the first question most founders ask when they discover ChatGPT is recommending their competitor: "okay, where do I pay to fix this?" You can't buy the recommendation. In 2026 OpenAI did start testing paid ads in ChatGPT - but they sit next to the answer, not inside it, and that difference is the whole point of this piece.

The short answer: ads exist, but not inside the answer

There is no submission form, no partner program and no ad product that puts your brand inside ChatGPT's organic answer. When the model says "for small teams, consider X and Y," nobody sold that slot. The model assembled it from two places: what it learned about the category in training, and what it pulled when it searched the web mid-answer. The same goes for Claude and Gemini's conversational answers.

What actually is for sale (October 2026)

Some adjacent inventory exists, and it's worth knowing the difference so nobody sells it to you as "AI visibility":

  • ChatGPT ads. In January 2026 OpenAI announced it would test ads for logged-in adults in the US on the Free and Go plans (Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free). Its stated rules: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" and "Ads are always separate and clearly labeled." On October 5, 2026 it added a visual ad format shown during image generation, starting with a test group of US advertisers later in October, plus measurement partners - and repeated that "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." So: a real channel for paid reach, labeled as such, and not a way into the recommendation.
  • Ads in Google's AI Mode. Google has tested ads in AI Mode since 2025 and announced two more formats, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, at Google Marketing Live in May 2026 (Search Engine Journal). These are Google Ads inventory, bought like search ads.
  • Not Perplexity, any more. Perplexity experimented with sponsored follow-up questions, then stopped taking new advertisers in late 2025 and said in February 2026 that it was walking away from ads to protect trust in its answers (TechSpot, reporting the Financial Times).
  • Shopping & booking integrations. Product feeds and merchant programs can get your catalogue into commerce experiences. Useful for e-commerce; irrelevant to "what's the best tool for X?"
  • Agencies selling "guaranteed mentions". Nobody can guarantee an organic AI mention. What a good agency can do is the unglamorous work below - which you can also do yourself.
Quick test for anything an agency pitches you: does the placement carry a "sponsored" label? Then it's an ad - possibly a useful one, but your buyers discount it the same way you do. The mention that actually converts is the organic one, and there's no invoice for it.

They became the easiest answer for the model to give. Concretely: their site states what they are and who they're for in plain, quotable sentences; they show up on the surfaces models learn from - reviews, comparisons, community threads; and someone is checking the answers regularly enough to notice when something shifts.

None of that is a hack, which is why it holds up. Stop paying for an ad and it vanishes the same day; become the best-documented option in your category and the recommendation outlasts the work that earned it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?

Not the answer itself. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in 2026 for logged-in US adults on the Free and Go plans, and added a visual ad format on October 5, 2026 - but it says ads are clearly labeled, kept separate and "do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." There's no submission form or partner programme that puts your brand inside the organic answer, and the same goes for Claude and Gemini's conversational replies. When the model names a few options, nobody sold that slot; it assembles the answer from what it learned in training and what it pulled when it searched the web mid-answer. The only way in is to become the easiest, best-documented option for the model to cite.

What about AI visibility services that guarantee a mention?

Nobody can guarantee an organic AI mention, so treat any "guaranteed mentions" pitch with caution. A useful test for anything an agency sells you is whether the placement carries a sponsored label - if it does, your buyers discount it the same way you do. What a good agency actually does is the unglamorous presence-building work, which you can also do yourself.

Is anything around AI answers actually for sale?

Yes, ads - but none of it is an organic recommendation. ChatGPT is testing labeled ads with a group of US advertisers, Google sells ad formats inside AI Mode, and shopping or booking integrations can get a product catalogue into commerce experiences. Perplexity, which once tested sponsored follow-up questions, has since said it is leaving ads. Everything for sale is labeled and sits apart from the answer - closer to a banner than a recommendation.
